Thousands Attempt Dangerous Crossing

Spanish officials said thousands of migrants attempted to enter Ceuta, with many swimming around the border breakwater or using inflatable devices to reach the enclave.

The surge overwhelmed local resources and border security. At least 18 people reportedly drowned while attempting the dangerous journey across the water.

Spain’s Interior Ministry said human trafficking networks had encouraged undocumented migrants to make the crossing following recent legal developments involving migrants intercepted at sea.

Spain Reinforces Security

In response to the situation, Spain announced it would deploy troops to support the Guardia Civil and strengthen security across the enclave.

Authorities also said they were working closely with Morocco to facilitate the return of migrants who entered the territory illegally.
