Shiv Sena corporator arrested after alleged assault on doctor at Maharashtra hospital

A Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) corporator has been arrested after allegedly assaulting a female doctor and members of the medical staff inside a government hospital in Maharashtra, India.

Authorities arrested Ramesh Mhatre following the alleged incident at KDMC Shastrinagar Hospital in Dombivli, Thane district. The confrontation reportedly stemmed from a dispute over the unavailability of beds in the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Dispute allegedly escalated inside hospital

According to preliminary reports, Mhatre visited the hospital during the dispute before an argument allegedly turned physical. Authorities say a female gynecologist and other hospital staff members were assaulted during the confrontation.

Video of the incident has since circulated on social media, drawing widespread criticism and renewed concerns over the safety of healthcare workers while on duty.

Police launch investigation

Police arrested Mhatre as investigators continue gathering evidence surrounding the incident. Authorities are working to determine the full sequence of events and whether additional charges will be filed.

The alleged assault has also sparked debate across India about the treatment of medical professionals and the responsibilities of elected public officials during disputes involving public services.

Healthcare workers condemn violence

The incident has prompted calls for stronger protections for doctors and hospital employees, with many arguing that disputes over shortages or medical resources should be resolved through established administrative and legal channels rather than confrontation.

Officials have not announced the outcome of the investigation, and the case remains under review as authorities continue their inquiries.
